For more than eight decades, the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology has been Israel’s primary technological university and the largest centre of applied research. It is ranked 25 among the world’s top technology universities (Times Higher Education Score, 2005). In the year 2004, Distinguished Technion’s Professors Avram Hershko and Aaron Ceichanover received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, for their pioneering research on degradation of intracellular proteins. In 2011 Prof. Schechtman won Nobel prize in Chemistry for his discoveries in crystallography.
Technion’s achievements have brought Israel to the forefront of high technology. The Technion offers degrees in science and engineering, and related fields such as Architecture, Medicine, Industrial Management and Environmental studies. Great emphasis is also placed on its humanities and social science programs, the incorporation of which take on ever-increasing importance in today’s multi-faceted workplace. But Technion’s goals go beyond providing a well-rounded technical education. At the institute, scientific instruction is interwoven with professional ethics, producing leaders sensitive to social and environmental issues.
Many innovations in all fields of science, technology, engineering and life sciences have their origins in research conducted at the Technion. Technion’s contributions to the growth of Israel’s agricultural industry, building and architecture, chemical and electronic industries, aerospace, energy, medicine and medical technology and biotechnology have been most significant.
The Department of Electrical Engineering of the Technion is ranked among the top 10 Electrical Engineering and Computer Science departments in the world. The department is the major source of engineers who lead the development of advanced Israeli technology in the fields of electronics, computers and communications. The department acts as a center of excellence in applied and theoretical research, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in electrical and computer engineering in Israel and throughout the world. The department activities constitute an important facet of the technological and scientific infrastructure of the State of Israel. Some 2000 undergraduate students study in the department for a B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer and software engineering, and 400 graduate students study for the higher degrees of M.Sc. and Ph.D. The department has extensive relations with industry as well as academic and industrial special liaison support programs. At both undergraduate and graduate levels, the curricula of instruction have been ranked as excellent by the recent international Review Committee. The undergraduate labs, the projects, and the student quality has been ranked by the Committee as second to none. The department offers B.Sc. programs in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and computer and software engineering, and also graduate programs leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. Students with outstanding academic achievements are rewarded with special conditions. Graduates of the department hold leading positions in Israeli high-tech industries. By providing a very wide and basic scientific background, strict selection of candidates, and high level of academic studies, the department enables the absorption of knowledge changing at a rapid pace. This allows graduates to not only cope with engineering problems of today, but also to face future challenges as well.
The Technion actively promotes the European Charter for researchers and the Code of Conduct for the recruitment of researchers. While research and education is conducted by the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, the financial and administrative aspects of the Technion’s involvement in Framework Programs, the administration of research, as well the commercialization of technologies, are coordinated by Technion Research & Development Foundation Ltd. (TRDF). TRDF is Technion’s fully owned subsidiary and it functions as Technion’s administration service and commercial arm. TRDF will and manage all Contractual, Financial and Legal aspects of Technion’s involvement in the project, ensuring full coordination with the National Contact Point ISERD and all other Governmental focal points.
